Sir William MacTaggart was born in Midlothian, Scotland, grandson of the renowned Scottish artist William MacTaggart (1835 -1910). He studied at the Edinburgh School of Art between 1917 and 1920, and thereafter in France and Italy. He first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1921, and at the Society of Scottish Artists in 1922. The following year he made the first of many trips to France, and had his first one man show in Cannes in 1924. In 1927 Sir William MacTaggart became a member of the Society of Eight (fellow artists included Sir John Lavery, S.J. Peploe and F.C.B.
